Libby Klinner Teaching

Hey, I’m Libby!

I am so happy you’re here! I’m Libby, a teacher with a passion for first grade. I love sharing fresh, engaging ideas for classroom teachers.

I am not one of those teachers that grew up wanting to be a teacher. I didn’t have parents and grandparents that were in education. Instead, I went to undergrad intending to be an undecided major, figuring it out as I went. When I went to orientation to register for classes, I was surprised to see that I was scheduled for everything in the Education building. I remember sitting in my first orientation meeting and being told that we were future teachers. It was then that I realized that I was surrounded by students that had chosen an education major. I have a very ‘Type B’ personality, so I thought ‘well I’m here now – I guess I’ll see how this goes.’ Now here I am, years later, so sure that being a teacher is what I was meant to do. If that isn’t proof that everything happens for a reason, I don’t know what is!

My Teaching Journey

After graduating undergrad, I returned to Atlanta and taught first grade for four years. I also earned my Masters degree while teaching. It was during this time that I began creating resources for my classroom. I struggled to find engaging activities that aligned with our standards. My coworkers encouraged me to put the things I made on Teachers Pay Teachers. I hoped that my work could save other teachers time! After getting married in 2019, I moved to the Pacific Northwest for my spouse’s job. After our move, it was incredibly difficult to find a teaching position. Our new home was surrounded by multiple sought-after teaching programs, so finding a job was hard. I was a substitute teacher, trying to get to know the schools in the area when COVID hit and I couldn’t substitute teach at all! This allowed me to explore my other passion – creating resources for teachers.

Eventually I was able to return to the classroom in 2020, teaching fifth grade and later fourth grade. We moved again in 2022, this time to Birmingham, Alabama where I’m once again teaching fourth. I enjoy the upper grades, but first grade is my favorite!

Although my journey may be different from most educators, it has also allowed me to explore ways in which I can help teachers whether I’m in the classroom or not. I am so grateful for the online teaching community and all the connections that I’ve made! It has shown me that I can make an even bigger impact on the teaching community, outside of my classroom.

My Family

My husband, Alex, and I had our son in July 2023! After loving on other people’s children for so many years, it has been such an incredible experience to become a mother. Alex and I love to travel and hope to continue to do so with our son.

About Me

I live for a beach trip and spending time with loved ones. With a little one on the way, the ability to work from home is the perfect way to support teachers while caring for our son. I treasure my coffee and quiet time in the morning and love to take our two pups on long walks. When I’m not creating and spending time with family, you can find me online shopping or reading!

Thank you for being here! I’d love to chat – is there something we share in common? Let’s connect!

When is your 100th day of school? 💯 I always l When is your 100th day of school? 💯

I always like to celebrate the 100th day by starting with some color by code pages! These fun 100-themed pages will help your students practice math facts and make a great independent activity 🙌 …and they’re half off through the end of this week!

Why do I love color by codes? ⬇️
🖍️ Not only are students developing meaningful math fact skills, but they are also engaging in fine motor practice. They have to color neatly and inside the lines. This requires the use of fine motor skills.

🖍️ They also get to stimulate the creative side of their brain! Coloring is viewed as a ‘fun’ activity and students will enjoy the opportunity to be creative.

🖍️ These printables also increase student engagement. When a student sees a blank coloring page, they feel the anticipating of what could be. This is the ideal brain space for learning!

🖍️ Coloring is calming. Completing these pages will be much less stressful than doing a round of flashcards. This is brain-friendly practice!

Want these pages? Comment ‘link’ and it will be sent to you in a dm 🤍

2/52: we had our first snow day! L loved walking a 2/52: we had our first snow day! L loved walking around in the snow but didn’t love touching it 😂 we only got maybe two inches so it melted pretty quickly the next day!

We had a chilly week in Birmingham, so besides getting back into our school routines, we spent a lot of time inside! I was a little nervous about how to transition back to school would go for my toddler, but it went so smoothly 🙌

💌 I also started prepping for Valentine’s Day - Walmart has some great inexpensive favors if you’re looking for your students!

The first few weeks after a break are a great time The first few weeks after a break are a great time to add in some SEL lessons! I love using books to introduce SEL concepts and I highly recommend this book called The Circles All Around Us 💗 It’s a great book about making connections with others.

After reading the book, use this activity to encourage a discussion about our own circles. Students will write or draw people that are in each ‘circle.’ Add your students’ photos to the inner circle or ask them to write their name! Then lead a discussion with students about how we can build relationships and make connections to grow our circles.

Swipe to see the companion activity ➡️ want the link? Check my bio or comment ‘circles’ below and I’ll send it to you directly!

My friend Zeba @kindergartencafe wrote another boo My friend Zeba @kindergartencafe wrote another book! 🩷

This is a second book in her series caring critters. Trixie loves to be a class clown and make others laugh. Unfortunately her silliness disrupts her classmates’ learning. Trixie learns about expected and unexpected behaviors and how to think about her actions.

Like Zeba explains in her book, she uses expected and unexpected to label the behavior because certain behaviors may be expected in different scenarios. For example, Trixie may sing while walking in line in the hallway. This is an unexpected behavior. However, if Trixie sang in music class, that would be expected.

This book is a great addition to your classroom library! I’ve had multiple students do the things that Trixie does, so this is the perfect teaching tool to help them learn to think about their behavior.

I’ll put a link to the book in my bio! 💛
