Phonics Friday 🔤 What are the 3 great spelling Phonics Friday 🔤 What are the 3 great spelling rules?

When you hear the ‘3 great spelling rules’ this refers to three rules we use when adding suffixes for base words. These three rules help students spell base words with suffixes as they grow their writing skills.

Rule 1: Double Final Consonants
When the base word has 1 syllable, 1 short vowel sound, and ends in 1 consonant, the final consonant must be doubled before adding the suffix. For example, clap + ing = clapping

You can use the rhyme 1-2 Double I Do, 1-2-3 No Double for Me to help students remember to count from the vowel to the end of the word to help them determine whether they can double or not.

Doubled: shopper, chatting, padded, winner
Not doubled: lighted, jumping, goaded, picker

Rule 2: Drop the Final E
When the base word ends in a final e, you must drop the e when you add a vowel suffix (-ing, -ed, -er, -able) to the word. When adding a consonant suffix (-s, -ly, -ful, -less), you do not need to drop the final e.

Dropped final e: shared, raking, finer, adorable
No dropped final e: hopeless, peaceful, lively

Rule 3: Change Y to I
When the base word ends in a consonant and the letter y, you must change the y to and i before adding the suffix. For example, fry + s = fries. If it ends in a vowel + y, you do not change it. For example joy + ful = joyful. The exception to this rule is when the suffix starts with an i, like -ing.

Change Y to I: puppies, worried, angrier
Do not change Y to I: trying, played, studying

So when should we teach these rules? Typically when students are starting to get a hang of adding suffixes, these rules can be taught. I usually teach the doubling rule after my students have learned the -ed and -ing endings. Once I’ve taught CVCe words, I usually introduce the dropped final e rule. After my students learn that Y can make both long i and long e sounds, I’ll teach the third rule. These three rules can be difficult to master, so continue going back to review each of them.

Want a cute Father’s Day activity to do before t Want a cute Father’s Day activity to do before the end of the year? Check out this toolbox 🧰 for dads, grandpas, uncles, and even moms!

I always like to do a Father’s Day activity before the year is over since we always do one for Mother’s Day! This craft is super versatile 😍 it includes options for dad, stepdad, grandpa, uncle, mom, and an option with no title at all

Students will write about their dad/grandpa/uncle/special person on each of the tools and then put them inside the toolbox 🧰 additionally, I included a version for moms too because dads aren’t the only parents that use tools 😉

Comment TOOLBOX for the link and I’ll send it to you in a DM!

In these last few weeks of school, I’ve talked w In these last few weeks of school, I’ve talked with a few teacher friends who are trying to take their days before they lose them!

At my last school we were able to roll over days for the next year, but they also had an incentive to cash in our days.

I’ve never been at a school long enough to acquire a lot of sick time because we move so much, but it’s interesting to me how different each district’s policy is regarding sick/personal days.

What’s your school’s policy on rollover days?

Also, if you want to streamline your planning for a substitute teacher, check out my editable sub binder! Comment on this reel ‘I want the binder’ and I’ll dm you the link! 🤍

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day 🖤 Th Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day 🖤

The Friday before Mother’s Day is recognized as Military Spouse Appreciation Day. It was first celebrated in 1984 by President Reagan.

This day is meant to honor the sacrifices made by military spouses - the missed birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and everyday moments that others take for granted. We keep our households running while our partners are on the other side of the world. We navigate unexpected challenges and accept broken plans and last minute changes. We disrupt our careers by changing jobs with each new move and we help our children adapt to every new environment.

From the late-night phone calls to tearful goodbyes, we navigate the rollercoaster of deployments, temporary assignments, and cross-country moves. We cherish the moments together and count down the days until reunions. Military spouses are the heartbeat of their families.

Happy Military Spouse Appreciation Day, fellow Milspos!
