…has been hectic but fun!! A few trips to the ER and many doctors visits have thrown us for a loop BUT all is well 🫶

These weeks have been filled with cuddles, sunset walks, new experiences, fall things, and time with family.

October is a busy month for us! We have lots of birthdays coming up and a wedding 😍 What are you looking forward to this month?

I meant to share this yesterday but after our little trip to the ER, that plan went out the window 🤪 so my two new crafts will be half off until tomorrow night (10/1) instead of tonight!

Turn your little students into scarecrows this fall! Simply take photos of each student, print, and add the scarecrow pieces 🍁 then they can write about what they would do if they were a scarecrow! These also make the perfect bulletin board display 🍂

We had so much fun yesterday showing L what his dad does! and we were lucky to get to see Alex take off for his TDY and wave bye 👋 to his plane! ✈️ L and I are flying solo for the next few days until Alex gets back home, and I’m once again here to say how grateful I am for this community! 🫶 It’s because you all support my small business that I’m able to stay at home with our son and have special moments like these 🤍

🔤 Phonics Friday! 🔤 What are open and closed syllables?

Open and closed syllables are the first two types of syllables that students should learn. Learning about syllable types helps students decode multisyllabic words as they are exposed to more vocabulary.

Open syllables end with a vowel and that vowel is long. Closed syllables end with a consonant and the vowel is short.

For example, the word even has one open syllable and one closed syllable. The first syllable -e- has a long vowel sound. The second syllable -ven- has a short vowel sound.

There are many one-syllable words that are closed syllables, like cat, pen, and fun. These words have short vowel sounds.

There are also some one-syllable words that are open syllables, like me, go, she, and so.

Later on students can learn about additional syllable types, but these are the two that should be introduced first.

Do your students struggle to build sentences? Now is the perfect time to teach them parts of a sentence! Littles may have trouble understanding subjects and predicates, so I introduce them as naming parts and telling parts! How do you teach this to your students? ⬇️

Sentence structure can be very complex. Understanding that every sentence requires a subject and predicate is a necessary foundational skill to build upon as students get older. These activities will help students understand that sentences begin with a naming part (subject), followed by a telling part (predicate). These terms (subject, predicate) are used within this resource along with other variations like naming/telling part and who/did what. Students will be exposed to sentence structure by building sentences using subjects and predicates and differentiating between subjects and predicates.
