5 Simple Tips to Solve Spring Fever in your Classroom
Have the wiggles taken over your classroom? Spring fever is in full swing come April! Are you looking for ways to solve spring fever? Keep reading for some ideas for your classroom!
Get your students outside
Whatever your lesson is, take your class outside! One of my classrooms was right next door to our outdoor classroom. It had shaded areas and benches to sit on. My students would bring their clipboard and pencil and get to work! Using the opportunity to go outside gives them motivation to get their work done and allows them to embrace the spring fever! And let’s be honest – this is a treat for the teacher too! I love getting outside when the weather is nice. It definitely cures my spring fever!
These kiddos are ready to go work outside with a partner! This is also a great time to get students to do an independent activity or work with a partner while you pull a small group for extra support!
Positive reinforcement
Introduce some whole class and individual student rewards. Students could earn VIP rewards, like the super stool and special crayons seen below, or they could earn something like extra iPad time or free time. I have more ideas about classroom management and student rewards in this blog post!
You know I love a secret student! This is always an effective strategy with my class and it will help reinforce positive behavior during spring fever. Read more about it in this blog post or this one!
This is a great way to encourage positive behavior and recognize students that are doing a great job!
Add in more brain breaks
I always try to get my students moving at various points throughout the day. It’s hard for me to sit all day, so I know it’s very difficult for them. Spring fever just adds to their wiggles! Whether it’s dancing to a Go Noodle video, free dance and sing to the doubles song, or a scoot around the room, movement definitely helps that spring fever.
Write around the room and scoot are two activities that get students moving while they practice a skill! You can get some of that spring fever energy out and keep them engaged at the same time. You can read more about how to do this with task cards here.
Work with your grade level
Usually when my class has spring fever, we are not alone! Work with your grade level team to make a whole grade reward! Come up with ways your students can burn off some energy and work through that spring fever. Do a kickball tournament; plan extra recess for the whole grade; have a four square competition. Find ways that your students can be active and have fun together!
Host a reading campout!
This is always a hit with my students. It’s a reward that they frequently requested! They can bring in a blanket and pillow and read under their desk fort while music plays and a campfire is up on screen. This could be done with any independent activity and it will definitely keep your students engaged and excited!
I hope these tips help you cure the spring fever in your classroom! Let me know if you would add anything to this list!
