Favorite Toddler Toys for a 12-Month-Old (Toys We Actually Use)
Shopping for toddler toys around the 12-month mark can feel overwhelming. At this age, babies are moving more, exploring everything, and learning at lightning speed — which means toys need to be engaging and durable. Over the past year, we’ve narrowed down a list of favorite toddler toys that our 12-month-old reaches for again and again. These aren’t just cute — they genuinely support development while keeping playtime fun.
🚶 Push Toys That Support Early Walkers
Once toddlers start pulling up and cruising, push toys become a game-changer. Some of our absolute favorite toddler toys have been push toys! The VTech Sit-to-Stand walker is great for encouraging movement without being too fast or flashy. Our toddler was obsessed with this walker! It helps build balance and confidence while keeping little legs busy.
When you’re little one is walking, this Push and Pop Bulldozer is so fun! When you push the bulldozer, a ball pops out of the top and into the bucket. It also sings, counts, names colors, and says construction-themed phrases. Our toddler had so much fun making the balls pop out of the chimney, and it is clearly a durable toy!
🔺 Stacking & Shape Toys for Skill Building
Stacking toys are some of the best toddler toys for developing hand-eye coordination and problem-solving. We love this stacking ring set because the rings have different textures and weights, making it more versatile than traditional stacking ring sets. I also love that the rings don’t have to be stacked in a certain order, like this Fisher Price one, that frustrated our toddler. The rings also have numbers to practice counting when they are older!
This shape sorter is another staple. It helps toddlers learn shapes and colors while giving them that satisfying “I did it!” moment when the piece fits just right. We love this one because it has a variety of shapes, providing more of a challenge for older toddlers, and it also comes in an easy to carry bucket! This is another great option that can travel with you!
Finally, this spinning stack of rings is so fun! The rings spin down the rod, making it even more engaging for toddlers. The rings are colorful so the spinning is very exciting. We have two of these!
🚗 Toys for Imaginative Play
Even at 12 months, toddlers are beginning early pretend play. The Dyson-look-alike child’s vacuum is perfect for the toddler who loves to imitate you! Our toddler absolutely loves to vacuum with us, so this has become one of our favorite toddler toys. This vacuum comes with a long handle for traditional cleaning and a short nozzle to get hard-to-reach spots. It looks just like the Dyson cordless vacuum, making role play very realistic! When you press the button, it sounds just like the vacuum too!
Continuing with the cleaning theme, we love this Spray, Squirt, & Squeeze Play Set from Melissa & Doug. The quality is impressive and the items are durable enough to withstand handling by a toddler. We love that the items are actually functional!
Finally, this play kitchen has been a big hit in our house for years now! We needed a play kitchen appropriate for our small house, and this one was perfect. While it did take some time to put together, it was absolutely worth it! It fits wonderfully in our small space and the lights, sounds, and kitchen accessories are adorable.
🎵 Musical Toys That Encourage Cause & Effect
At this age, toddlers love toys that respond to their actions. The Wooden Pound & Tap Musical Bench Xylophone is a great open-ended toy that encourages creative exploration without being overstimulating.
These wooden musical instruments are a great way to explore sounds without being too loud or annoying. It comes with a variety of instruments and the quality is good, withstanding toddler hands. The instruments are also a great size for little hands. There’s a set at my parent’s house that has gotten a lot of love!
💬 Toys to Promote Speech and Expand Vocabulary
Around this age, toddlers are either beginning to speak or use sign language. Toys like this vocabulary book teach children new words while keeping them entertained. The pages cannot be torn and it has both English and Spanish versions. When your child taps a picture in the book, the book will name the picture, make sound effects, or give a fun fact. All of the books in the 100 Words series are great!
We also loved these vocabulary cards. It took some practice for our toddler to learn how to put the cards inside the slot, but once he figured it out, he was able to do this independently! When you slide a card into the slot, the reader names the picture. This is a great way to expose children to new vocabulary words. We keep all the cards and the little device in a bag together because the box the cards came in was torn long ago!
Why These Are Our Favorite Toddler Toys
All of these favorite toddler toys share one thing in common: they encourage learning through play without feeling overwhelming. They support motor skills, sensory development, and early independence — while still being fun enough to earn repeat play time.
If you’re shopping for a 12-month-old, these toys are a solid place to start and ones we have truly used and loved!
