Use this resource to introduce capitalization and periods to your students! There are three activities included to practice identifying correct capitalization and periods. It does not include sentences with exclamation points or question marks. Click here to see a set that includes activities with all three end marks.

What’s included?

• 1 punctuation mini book: Print, cut in half, and staple into a mini book.
• 1 set of sorting cards: Cards will be sorted into two groups: correct and incorrect sentences. Also includes a cut and glue sort recording page.
• 1 sentence worksheet: Print and go – no prep needed.

What skills are covered with these activities?

These three activities are meant to reinforce proper mechanics in sentences. Students will practice identifying and creating correct sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with a period. These sentences do not require knowledge of question marks, exclamation marks, or capitalization of proper nouns.

How should I use this resource in my classroom?

• Students will complete the mini book with a partner, in a small group, or with the rest of the class. They will practice writing periods and adding them to the end of sentences.
• The sorting cards make a great small group activity or a literacy center activity with a partner. Students will sort the cards into two groups: correct and incorrect sentences. The sentence cards may have correct sentences or may be missing a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence or a period at the end of the sentence. Students can also complete the recording page. They will cut out the sentences, sort them, and glue them into place.
• The sentence writing page is a great independent activity. The sentences contain primarily CVC words and high frequency words and are decodable for early readers. Students will re-write the sentences with correct capitalization at the beginning of the sentence and a period at the end.
