I’m so happy you’re here! I’m Libby, and I love all things first grade – the curriculum, the content, and the sweet kiddos. I’m passionate about helping K-2 teachers save time in the classroom with fresh ideas and fun, effective resources. My spouse is in the military, so I’ve learned to be very adaptable while moving from school to school. We are currently stationed in Birmingham, Alabama with our two pups and a baby on the way! When I’m not creating or spending time with loved ones, you can find me online shopping or learning about the science of reading.

If you’re looking for hands-on, engaging activities for the primary classroom, you’re in the right place! Take a peek around, grab some freebies, and explore ideas on the blog. I can’t wait to connect with you, teacher friend!

Need something to do on your last day before break Need something to do on your last day before break? Or do you need something to keep your kids occupied while they’re home over break? Do snowy writing!! ❄️

Spray shaving cream (a.k.a. ‘snow’) on your students’ desks and have them practice any skill you’re working on! They can spell sight words or spelling words. They can write math equations, draw diagrams, etc. ☃️

This is such a fun review game to play! Students love writing in shaving cream and it’s a quick assessment of where your students are at with certain skills. Plus you can grab a can of Barbasol at the grocery store for $2!

Looking for more ways to keep your students engaged in December? I listed some easy ideas in the blog! Comment link and I’ll dm it to you!

In the trenches of the newborn + toddler phase, so In the trenches of the newborn + toddler phase, someone once told me, “your baby needs you physically; your toddler needs you mentally”

Looking at my kids’ needs this way totally changed my mindset. Prioritizing being mentally present for my toddler while caring for my twins’ physical needs made this phase easier to manage. My toddler just needed to know that I was still going to be there for him and that I still loved him even though our family dynamic has changed some.

So what did this look like?
Each week I set aside time that was just for him and me. At first, that looked like cuddling and reading a book together. Later, it looked like a quick outing to share a blueberry muffin. It didn’t really matter what we did, as long as I made time to be mentally present for him (not checking my phone, feeding the babies, changing a diaper, etc)

His whole world has changed, and while I know it’s changed for the better, I also know it’s going to take time for him to adjust.

What’s something that helped you manage a toddler and newborn?

Phonics Friday 🔤 What is phoneme segmentation? Ph Phonics Friday 🔤 What is phoneme segmentation?

Phoneme segmentation is one piece of phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the foundation in the building blocks of reading. Segmenting sounds is one of the pieces needed to achieve phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds, or phonemes, in spoken words. For example, the word tap has three phonemes: /t/ /a/ /p/. The word witch has three phonemes, although it is made up of five letters: /w/ /i/ /tch/.

Students that demonstrate phonemic awareness can manipulate sounds they hear in spoken words. It’s important to use a variety of phonemic awareness activities, like phoneme segmentation, to teach students how to hear and manipulate sounds.

After students have become experienced with isolating and blending phonemes, they are then ready to segment them, pulling the sounds apart. This is the next step in achieving phonemic awareness.

What is phoneme segmentation?
Phoneme segmentation means identifying sounds within a word and pulling them apart. Ask ‘what sounds do you hear in the word ship?’ You want your students to pick out each sound within the word, responding with /sh/ /i/ /p/.

You can show them a picture and ask them to identify the sounds in the word or give them a word and ask them to break it apart into sounds. This is phoneme segmentation! When you ask them to identify the corresponding letters for each sound, it becomes a phonics activity!

Why is it important?
Phoneme segmentation works in conjunction with phoneme blending, making them the primarily skills needed to read and spell. Later on, students will use segmentation heavily in their writing. When they write a word, they will segment the sounds and connect each sound to its corresponding letter, writing out the word. Students that have a strong foundation in phoneme segmentation before sound-letter correspondence is added in will be more successful in their phonics journey.

Phoneme segmentation and blending bridge the gap between hearing sounds and reading words. It’s important to teach phoneme segmentation using sounds only (no print letters) so that students can focus on that alone.
MOVING UPDATE 👏 We are moving to… the suburbs! MOVING UPDATE 👏

We are moving to…

the suburbs!

We learned about a month ago that the Air Force was sending us to Oklahoma in June! We petitioned to stay in Birmingham instead so that Alex could finish out his commitment while we remain close to family. Last week we received official confirmation that our request was approved, so it was time to plan for our future in Birmingham.

Since becoming a family of 5 we have outgrown our house, so keep us in your thoughts as we look for more space in the suburbs! We’re crossing our fingers that we can make this move happen before Alex deploys early next year. These next few months are going to be a wild ride 🤪 but we’re so so happy to stay put for a few more years! Send thoughts and prayers!!

lol I now realize these photos make it look like we’re moving to the beach 🙃 but they were just the most recent fam photos I could find from our beach trip in October 😂

One of my favorite things about the holiday season One of my favorite things about the holiday season is receiving cards 💌 We just started receiving cards in the mail this week! A few years ago I started collecting all the cards that we receive and putting them into a book. I love going back to look at the cards through the years. I use these free covers that @justcaracarroll made and they are displayed on our coffee table during the holiday season🎄I always add our card to the front of the book too 🥹 It’s so fun to look back through the stacks each year!

Do you keep your holiday cards?? ⬇️
